What is ABAM?

The American Board of Aesthetic Medicine (ABAM) is an independent specialty board created to establish a standardized pathway for physicians with non-cosmetic backgrounds to acquire certification in the field of aesthetic medicine. Doctors from various medical fields are now incorporating aesthetic procedures into their practices, and for them, a formal education and certification process are crucial. Currently, the only formal pathway for education in aesthetic medicine is completing a residency in plastic surgery or dermatology, which isn’t open to other specialties. ABAM contributes to improving the quality of care in the field of aesthetic medicine by offering this certification.

ABAM is not affiliated with any other organization. As an independent board, it has its own certification and requirement process. Being certified by ABAM demonstrates that doctors have the appropriate education, clinical skills, and knowledge necessary for the safe and excellent application of aesthetic medicine. Certification by the American Board of Aesthetic Medicine also indicates that the doctor has met clinical and educational criteria to qualify for a comprehensive and rigorous written exam, which they have successfully passed.

Aesthetic Medicine Certification

The American Board of Aesthetic Medicine (ABAM) is an independent specialty board established to provide a standardized pathway for physicians with non-cosmetic backgrounds to obtain certification in the field of aesthetic medicine. Doctors from various medical fields are now integrating aesthetic procedures into their practices, and for them, a formal education and certification process are highly important. Presently, the only recognized educational path in aesthetic medicine is completing a residency in plastic surgery or dermatology, which isn’t accessible to other specialties. ABAM contributes to enhancing the quality of care in aesthetic medicine by offering this certification.

ABAM has no affiliations with any other organization. As an autonomous board, it has its certification and requirement process. Doctors certified by ABAM have demonstrated that they possess the appropriate education, clinical skills, and knowledge required for the safe and effective application of aesthetic medicine. Certification by the American Board of Aesthetic Medicine also signifies that the doctor has met clinical and educational criteria to qualify for a comprehensive and meticulous written exam, which they have successfully passed.

Our Process

Step 1

Aesthetic Medicine Training

Participants will acquire sufficient knowledge and fundamental techniques to complement their existing practices with aesthetic medical procedures or initiate an independent medical spa practice. Step 1 training will cover fundamental information in skin and hair anatomy, basic botulinum toxin techniques (Botox / Dysport / Xeomin / Jevau), basic dermal filler techniques (Juvederm / Restylane / Voluma / Radiesse / Bellafil / Belotero), basic laser and light therapy techniques (surface rejuvenation / hair removal / tattoo removal IPL), laser and light device safety, chemical peels, the business of aesthetic medicine, and setting up offices for aesthetic medical procedures. Practical training and demonstrations will be conducted in a real clinical setting, such as a cosmetic center or medical spa. Additionally, a functional medical spa tour will be provided. Graduates from Step I aesthetic medicine training will possess the necessary knowledge and confidence to embark on practicing in the exciting field of aesthetic medicine.

Step 3

Anti-Aging Medicine

After completing Step 2, a 6-month practice period is required to proceed to Step 3. Step 3 constitutes the final training program for participants in the process of obtaining the Board Certification from the American Board of Aesthetic Medicine. It’s specifically designed for those looking to integrate Anti-Aging Medicine & Regenerative Medicine (stem cell therapy, platelet-rich plasma / PRP) into their current practices.

Participants will learn advanced dermal filler injection techniques for facial sculpting and contouring. Covered procedures will include temple augmentation, jawline shaping, chin augmentation, and hand injections. Instruction will encompass sclerotherapy, non-surgical skin tightening techniques (radiofrequency/RF, ultrasound/US), non-surgical body contouring/fat reduction procedures (cryolipolysis, US cavitation, RF, Kybella), and varicose vein treatment using Poly-L-Lactic Acid (Sculptra).

Understanding bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and regenerative medicine is crucial for today’s aesthetic and cosmetic doctors. More patients are increasingly seeking or already receiving anti-aging treatments. Foundational concepts in stem cell therapy, PRP, and BHRT for aging and injury management will be addressed. Evaluating aging patients, female hormonal systems, stem cell functions, stem cell harvesting, nutrition, and fitness are integral parts of the Step 3 aesthetic education course.

Upon completion of the Step 3 curriculum, a Certificate in Anti-Aging Medicine will be awarded.

Step 2

Advanced Aesthetic Medicine Training

Participants who have graduated from the American Board of Aesthetic Medicine (ABAM) Step 1 program or those with fundamental skills in aesthetic medicine can join our Step 2 training. They will enhance their knowledge in the field of aesthetic medicine and learn the latest and most advanced aesthetic techniques. Through procedures involving Botox, dermal fillers, and advanced aesthetic laser techniques for facial contouring, participants will elevate their skills in the field of aesthetic medicine to the next level. Step 2 training will encompass procedures like Botox eyelift, scar reduction with Botox, Botox treatment for gummy smiles, and masseter Botox injections for facial shaping. Dermal filler education will cover procedures for facial contouring, including tear trough injections, mid-face/cheek augmentation, and non-surgical nose augmentation. Facial analysis for aesthetic procedures is an essential component of this training.

Advanced laser education will consist of combination therapies for skin rejuvenation and vascular treatments. Additionally, micro-needling/collagen induction therapy (CIT), fundamental aesthetic dermatology, and cosmeceuticals will also be covered.

Upon completion of the Step 2 course, an Advanced Certificate in Aesthetic Medicine will be awarded.

Board Exam

Once all the necessary training has been completed (Steps 1-3), candidates are required to present three advanced procedure cases to sit for the Board Exam. The duration of the written exam is 4 hours.
